Ever wonder why some of your favorite actresses’ careers seem to fizzle for no reason?
Sadly, it seems the answer is probably Harvey Weinstein and his complicit brother Bob Weinstein.
Award-winning actresses Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd were two of the many women who have spoken out about the movie mogul’s sexual assault and harassment, and their subsequent blacklisting. And now we have corroboration from a major film director around the time.
Peter Jackson has told New Zealand magazine Stuff that when he was casting the future megahit Lord Of The Rings trilogy, he was indeed warned off from hiring both stars:
“I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998. At the time, we had no reason to question what these guys were telling us – but in hindsight, I realise that this was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing.
I now suspect we were fed false information about both of these talented women – and as a direct result their names were removed from our casting list.”
So awful! Weinstein didn’t just go after their bodies, he attacked their bodies of work. What a piece of shit.
Jackson agreed, even at the time:
“My experience, when Miramax controlled the Lord of the Rings (before New Line took over production of the film), was of Weinstein and his brother behaving like second-rate Mafia bullies. They weren’t the type of guys I wanted to work with – so I haven’t… Although his name had to be on the Lord of the Rings credits for contractual reasons, he was not involved in the movies we ended up making.”
Too bad he didn’t put two and two together and realize the rumors he was fed about those actresses was also an example of their mob tactics.
At least he’s coming clean now. Jackson’s admission has come as some vindication for both Mira and Ashley, who saw the Stuff article and tweeted:
Just seeing this after I awoke, I burst out crying. There it is, confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure. Thank you Peter Jackson for being honest. I’m just heartsick https://t.co/ljK9NqICbm
