Wow — Rob Thomas got into some hot water Down Under.

The Matchbox Twenty frontman was performing on his solo tour this weekend when he had a performance in Melbourne that got noticed for all the wrong reasons.

During a lag in the performance, Thomas told the crowd a story about how he had figured out how to combat jet lag flying over from the U.S. and told what turned out to be a very off-color joke in the process, saying:

“When you get on the plane on your way here, you start drinking. And then I drink till I think I’m Australian. And then I keep drinking till I think I’m a black Australian.”

After the crowd booed, he continued:

“Don’t be racist. And then I drink until I think I’m a pretty little girl. And then my wife starts to get worried about me and I stop drinking for a minute.”

Only it wasn’t the crowd who was being racist… it was Rob.

The “black Australian” comment elicited offense towards Australia’s aboriginal people and that community’s difficulty in combating alcoholism, so Rob’s joke was more than a little insensitive.

On Sunday, though, the frontman posted to Facebook a heartfelt apology to Australians and fans alike.

I would like to take an opportunity to further explain the comments I made in Melbourne last night. First, please…

Wow. Honestly, good on him for completely coming clean about how ignorant he was to the situation.

Let’s just hope he learns from his mistakes!
